R.E.M. (REM) - Accelerate Double LP

On 2008's ACCELERATE, its first studio album after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, R.E.M. fittingly returns to its post-punk roots, offering up a taut, guitar-driven set that serves as the perfect antidote to the slow, snoozy AROUND THE SUN. Aiding frontman Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills in this convincing return to vintage form is U.K. producer Jacknife Lee, best known for working with Bloc Party and, appropriately, R.E.M.'s peers U2. While those acts often aim for widescreen majesty, however, Stipe, Buck, and Mills seem to have remembered that the group's strength lies in concise, pithy tunes, and Lee is quite willing to meet that aesthetic, as evinced on the restless opener, "Living Well Is the Best Revenge," and the raucous "Horse to Water." Of course, the Georgian band hasn't forgotten its artistic evolution from MURMUR, nodding subtly to GREEN on the shimmering "Supernatural Superserious" and evoking AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE on the pensive "Until the Day Is Done." Easily R.E.M.'s finest album since NEW ADVENTURES IN HI-FI, ACCELERATE stands as one of the revered ensemble's most immediate and engaging records, and will undoubtedly please fans who have patiently been waiting for the trio to embark on a U2-like rejuvenation.

Current 93 - Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre LP

Originally released in 1994, Current 93's masterpiece Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre followed the classic Thunder Perfect Mind album and marked another leap forward for the band. Michael Cashmore's gorgeously delicate guitar, augmented by drones, bells, and sound manipulations, help to make this one of C93's most musically hypnotic albums, with David Tibet's vocals and text adding a quietly controlled power and drama virtually unsurpassed in the Current 93 canon. This reissue has been completely remastered and features newly designed artwork.

A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons Double LP

The music of the full band (two guitars, two violins, cello, contrebasse and drums) has grown louder, looser, full of spittle and tears. On 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons, riffs are the backbone more than ever. Anchored by new drummer Eric Craven (ex-Hangedup), the band works its slow build and burn with newfound patience, sinuousness and ferocity. Whether methodically framing walls of sound over the four-on-the-floor punk dirge of "1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound" or exploding in sheets of free noise and melody on "Black Waters Blowed", the band has never rocked harder and has never sounded more determined, desperate and driven. A stuttered blues riff is the foundation for the album's title track, making its appearance after a blisteringly minimalist intro. "Engine Broke Blues" features a gorgeous set of chords that build inexorably from multiple guitar, string and organ lines

Widespread Panic - Free Somehow LP

Another Widespread Panic album, another attempt to transfer the band's live energy onto tape. Free Somehow isn't Widespread's best studio effort to date, nor does it pack the same punch as the band's ever-popular concerts, where extended solos and long-running jams are more likely to illicit dropping jaws than drowsy, nodding heads. Still, this disc is nothing to sleep through, even if Widespread Panic haven't learned to utilize a studio's amenities as well as Phish or moe. "Boom Boom Boom," "Walk on the Flood," and "Flicker" are fierce tunes, full of enough guitar muscle and saucy strut to make them worthy of repeated listens, although they do sound geared for a live setting. Free Somehow gets intimate, too, most notably with the lilting title track and the steady, elegiac "Dark Day Program." But Widespread Panic don't truly stretch their wings until the album's final stretch, where "Her Dance Needs No Body" takes the listener on an eight-minute stoner's odyssey of rainy-day guitars, horns, sweeping percussion, and orchestrated strings. It's a well-crafted song with movements, interludes, and multiple guitar solos, a cross between the Grateful Dead's "Dark Star" and Guns N' Roses' "November Rain." Here, the band truly works with the studio's capabilities, layering the standout track with instruments and adding a thick, crisp slab of reverb to John Bell's vocals. So while Free Somehow can't quite rival the energy of a Widespread show, it still offers something that those concerts cannot, making the album a worthwhile purchase for most dedicated fans. - AMG

Apples In Stereo - Electronic Projects for Musicians - Limited edition LP

Fresh off the release of the critically acclaimed New Magnetic Wonder and one of the most productive years of their career (including recording a remix for Yoko Ono and tours of Europe and Taiwan), The Apples in stereo are releasing the long-awaited compilation Electronic Projects for Musicians through Simian Records/Yep Roc Records/ Elephant 6. Named after an electronics how-to manual by Craig Anderton, the album can be seen as the band's follow-up to their 1996 compilation Science Faire.

Tyrannosaurus Rex - My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair… But Now They're Content To Wear Stars… - 180 Gram LP

Before Marc Bolan became the glam rock superstar behind T-Rex, he was just a hippy boy with a guitar writing mystical Tolkien-inspired folk songs populated by fairies and ogres. But thanks to producer Tony Visconti, this boy & his trusty drum playing friend Steve Peregrin Took soon had a record contract and this their debut album, actually made it to the top of the British charts in 1967 when it was released.

Contains the bonus track "Debora" plus a lyric sheet.

Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth - 180 Gram LP

By the time World Shut Your Mouth, Cope's solo debut, was released in 1984 the Teardrop Explodes had only just disbanded. Cope by this time had a considerable reputation as being a drug fiend and borderline lunatic, but he knew how to use these qualities to his advantage, both musically and in terms of PR. Cope knowingly launches himself into an ethereal world, at times wistful, at times angst ridden inspired psych influenced space pop.

Bardo Pond - Batholith - includes CD - LP

Batholith is a collection of six tracks that are near and dear to bardo pond but, for some reason or another, have never previously been released. That one-sentence description might lead one to think that these tracks are "outtakes" or cutting-room floor type material - neither conclusion could be further from the truth. The tracks included on "Batholith" range from previous live staples ("a tune" one made 'famous' by opening bardo pond's set at terrorstock II in San Francisco as joined by Roy Montgomery [and a recording of which was featured on the KFJC compilation live from the devil's triangle, volume 2] to tracks the band recorded in John Peel sessions.

Collected as a whole , these tracks form a fluid and cohesive album. Batholith is not just an exciting moment for long time bardo pond fans, but a great jumping on point for folks who are relatively new to their craft.

As per the three lobed standard, Batholtih is pressed on 180 gram RTI vinyl. It is housed within a heavy "old-style" one pocket stoughton gatefold jacket bearing new artwork by John Gibbons and Isobel Sollenberger.

Released as a limted edition of 1049 copies, includes a glass-mastered CD of the material present on the album.

The Breeders - Mountain Battles - includes download (pre-order) LP

Their first album since 2002's "Title TK". By turns goofy, groovy, melancholy, strung-out, catchy, atmospheric, and at times, impossibly lovely, "Mountain Battles" underlines that Kim Deal is a songwriter and musician of rare intuition. Her songs move from offhand charm to emotional truth with casual grace, balancing scuffed-up noise against fraught silence; timeless structures against strange new shapes. And throughout is Kim's unique voice - languid, urgent, bruised, and beautiful. "Mountain Battles" captures all the bittersweet electricity of classic Breeders records like "Pod" and "Last Splash", and still manages to break new ground. Deluxe 28-page booklet with both formats. Look for appearances at SXSW, Coachella, and Bonnaroo, and a national tour upon release, followed by a fall tour.

Tapes 'N Tapes - Walk It Off - includes download (Pre-order) Double LP

The Minneapolis-based band's first record since 2006's widely lauded "The Loon" which established them as ones to watch. Tapes 'N Tapes' signature sound is distinctly their own concoction: shaky vocals, bursts of lo-fi guitars, and haunting keyboard refrains. Jittery rock that's found the sweet spot where experimental song structure meets melodic accessibility.

"The album...is unique in an era of slick 80s chic, mixing the opaque jams of Pavement with the bruised-teen freakiness of The Pixies, while adding cocktail jazz and Tex-Mex folk music like thrift store finds" - Spin.

Raconteurs - The Consolers Of The Lonely - 180 Gram Double LP

STATEMENT FROM THE BAND

The Raconteurs are happy to announce that in one week’s time their second album, entitled "Consolers Of The Lonely", will be available EVERYWHERE Tuesday, March 25th.

It contains 14 new recordings and is being released globally on Third Man Records in conjunction with our marketing/distribution partners, XL Recordings and Warner Brothers Records.

The album was mastered and completed in the first week of March. It was then taken immediately to a vinyl pressing plant. Then to a CD pressing plant. Then preparations to sell it digitally began. March 25th became the soonest date to have it available in EVERY FORMAT AT ONCE. The band have done no interviews or advertisements for this record before this announcement.

The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised. We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding it’s availability, reception or perception.

With this release, The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all important "first week sales". We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by it’s first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it.

Another purpose was to also allow people to have their own choice as to exactly which format they would like to hear the album in IMMEDIATELY, rather than having to wait for their favorite format to become available. The band are also not releasing any version of this record that contains bonus tracks. Musically this album will be the same as the band created it no matter what format it is purchased in (The sound quality of each format however, is a different story. The Raconteurs recommend hearing it on vinyl, but the choice is of course up to the listener).

The band also prefer that fans buy the album as a whole instead of breaking up the tracks, but until iTunes and other digital services allows bands to release their albums with the option of NOT breaking it up, it will be sold in that fashion on those particular sites. On the band’s website however, the album will be sold in its entirety as an mp3 at 320kb bit rate. Also in Japan, fans will be able to download the record via their mobile phones, as that is how a majority of recorded music is consumed there.

The reason we are announcing this release one week ahead of time is because of retail pre-ordering and stocking, information about this album’s imminent release was bound to come to light and could be confusing to fans. Also in the event that the record leaks, we didn’t want this method of release to be seen as a REACTION to such a leak. It’s not. The actual worst thing about a leak is the usual poor sound quality, akin to watching a movie on a wristwatch instead of in a theater. Which for the album’s creators is a bit of a letdown, but again, it is completely up to the listener.

There will be a video up on the internet for the first single, "Salute Your Solution", on the 25th as well, provided it gets edited in time. We just filmed it the other day!

We hope not to confuse anyone with too many options, or deny them the formats that they like best. The Raconteurs feel very strongly that music has worth and should be treated as such. Thank you to all those who respect music in this fashion, and thank you to our label partners for working with us to get this album to fans in as many formats as possible all at once.

Thank you, and we hope that you enjoy "Consolers Of The Lonely".

Juliette & The Licks - Four On The Floor - includes download LP

Previously only available at a much higher price as an import, "Four On The Floor" is now available as a domestic US release including a free download of the entire album.

Apparently, one of the golden rules of rock & roll is that the presence of Dave Grohl on drums makes any band better. It makes a great band transcendent — see not only Nirvana, of course, but also Queens of the Stone Age — but it can even make OK bands sound pretty decent, as Juliette and the Licks' second album, Four on the Floor, proves (its very title a seeming allusion to Grohl's cameo). Juliette and the Licks were perfectly fine and perfectly forgettable on their debut, but here they seem to have weight, largely due to the granite foundation Grohl lays down. He gives this momentum and magnitude, to which Juliette adds, well, a whole bunch of songs about rocking. If she sounds passingly like Polly Jean Harvey, she's a PJ who just doesn't care about anything deeper than what happened last night and what might happen tonight. Which is totally rock & roll, of course — right down to her rants about a "Death of a Whore," complete with a machine-gun burst of profanity on the breakdown — but it's hard not to shake the feeling that Grohl gives an illusion of substance this aggressively shallow music doesn't quite deserve. That said, he does make Four on the Floor rock — which is good, since an album about rock & roll should at least rock — and if listened to as background music at a party, it's a good time, since it never slows down and never lets up, so it's the ideal soundtrack for a night of debauchery. - AMG

Led Zeppelin - IV - 180 Gram LP

180 Gram deluxe edition re-issue from the original mastertapes, released in a gatefold sleeve.

Encompassing heavy metal, folk, pure rock & roll, and blues, Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album is a monolithic record, defining not only Led Zeppelin but the sound and style of '70s hard rock. Expanding on the breakthroughs of III, Zeppelin fuse their majestic hard rock with a mystical, rural English folk that gives the record an epic scope. Even at its most basic — the muscular, traditionalist "Rock and Roll" — the album has a grand sense of drama, which is only deepened by Robert Plant's burgeoning obsession with mythology, religion, and the occult. Plant's mysticism comes to a head on the eerie folk ballad "The Battle of Evermore," a mandolin-driven song with haunting vocals from Sandy Denny, and on the epic "Stairway to Heaven." Of all of Zeppelin's songs, "Stairway to Heaven" is the most famous, and not unjustly. Building from a simple fingerpicked acoustic guitar to a storming torrent of guitar riffs and solos, it encapsulates the entire album in one song. Which, of course, isn't discounting the rest of the album. "Going to California" is the group's best folk song, and the rockers are endlessly inventive, whether it's the complex, multi-layered "Black Dog," the pounding hippie satire "Misty Mountain Hop," or the funky riffs of "Four Sticks." But the closer, "When the Levee Breaks," is the one song truly equal to "Stairway," helping give IV the feeling of an epic. An apocalyptic slice of urban blues, "When the Levee Breaks" is as forceful and frightening as Zeppelin ever got, and its seismic rhythms and layered dynamics illustrate why none of their imitators could ever equal them. - AMG

Teenagers - Reality Check LP - includes download

This French trio's sound is built around a backbone of golden pop melodies, enveloped in a sardonic wit and lingering Sofia Coppola soft focus. Although all the members are 20-somethings, adolescence is a concept that cuts to the group's core. They're in love with the idea of the dreamy teen, inspired by sunset walks through the park, clogging up shopping malls for no good reason, holding hands, and stolen kisses in the cinema. Similar to most filthy mouthed teens, "Reality Check" is full of foul innuendos and lyrics that would make Serge Gainsbourg blush. With its nonchalant and biting humor, this record is a 21st Century lo-fi French pop backdrop, awash in guitar hooks and soaring electro synth riffs.

Black Crowes - Warpaint - Limited edition LP + 7" Single

Limited edition vinyl package includes a bonus 7" single with bonus tracks.

Looking back, it seems inevitable that the Black Crowes would suffer a rocky middle age. Young bands yearning to be old tend to stumble when the years start to pile up, once hunger and ambition start to fade into the ceaseless grind of the road, and the Crowes were no exception. After they mapped out the furthest reaches of their world on 1994's Amorica they slowly spun their tires, turning out records both respectable and tired, before internal tensions slowly tore the brothers Robinson apart, leading to a split in 2002, not long after the release of their sixth album, Lions. A few years of solo wanderings led the Crowes to a reunion in 2005, but they had to go through a few more lineup changes — including the addition of North Mississippi Allstar Luther Dickinson as the replacement for guitarist Marc Ford — before they buckled down to record their seventh album, 2008's Warpaint. All that turmoil and trouble are felt on Warpaint, as are the years the band spent paying dues on the jam band circuit after Amorica. Warpaint shows that the decade of hard struggle gave the Crowes soul and chops, turning them into the band they've always wanted to be. The Black Crowes haven't changed their basic sound — ever since Shake Your Money Maker the band has always drawn deeply from the Stones and Faces, tempering that British swagger with Southern-fried blues borrowed from the Allmans, then slowly threading hippie mysticism throughout — but the feel of the band has changed, as the Crowes have turned from reckless ruffians into seasoned veterans, with the group feeling lived-in and genuine. There's depth here, highlighted by an instrumental suppleness that slightly recalls Little Feat — particularly on the slow-rolling "Oh Josephine" with its gently cascading choruses — an evolution that could only be earned during those years on the road, building the band through nightly jams and a slow cycle of membership turnovers. This is a suppleness that has grit, thanks especially to Dickinson's glass slide runs that give this music some welcome grease. The Crowes also pull off a couple of sly moves here, weaving some swirling psychedelia through the chorus of "Movin' on Down the Line," turning the Reverend Charlie Jackson's "God's Got It" into a heavy, heavy backwoods stomp, then spinning the closing "Whoa Mule" into a roiling blues raga. These are the turns and tricks of veterans, who can slide these flourishes into their signature sound without calling attention to their changeups, but these numbers are enough of a departure to garner attention — what may not get as much praise is how the Crowes write compellingly within their standard sound, as they do here, beginning with the opening gambit of the down'n'dirty "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution" and the crawling "Walk Believer Walk." From there, Warpaint continues to gain momentum, as this album is not only their strongest set of songs since Amorica, it has a depth and presence that is rare for a digital age creation and, best of all, the album has a true narrative thrust, making it feel like a true classic rock album. What the Black Crowes have done here is what true journeymen do: they don't renounce their past, they build upon it, finding hidden depths within it, shaping tradition after their own image to make it sound fresh. They're old-fashioned, but in the best sense: they're in it for the long haul, which the superb Warpaint proves beyond a shadow of a doubt. - AMG

Mission Of Burma - The Horrible Truth About Burma - 180 Gram

The posthumous album, originally released in 1984, has never been available on CD until now. The vinyl has been unavailable since the 1980s. Re-mastered and restored to its correct sequence with three bonus tracks. 32-page booklet contains ephemera, photos, and interviews. Vinyl is true all-analog, HQ-180 pressing.

"Combining rock 'n' roll's traditional fetish for pure, unmediated feeling, with a more modern sort of artistic calculation, Burma's music could evoke everything from the Beatles' ecstatic run of Hamburg rock clubs in the early 60s to the lightning-speed hardcore punk that was developing in the US during Burma's tenure. In this sense, Burma can be said to have blithely encapsulated punk's overarching mission: to draw a line connecting rock rebels past and present, and, in doing so, re-imagine and re-establish the music's anarchic condition" - Salon.com.

Beck - Stereopathetic Soulmanure Double LP

Back in print on vinyl after a long long time...

Culled from recording sessions between i88 and i94 on live two-track, demo four-track, and 16-track, ending months before the Mellow Gold sessions (which launched him into instant fame with the single iLoseri), this album documents Beckis first connections with greatness, and it hasnit eroded one grain in the interim. Stereopathetic is filled with slide guitars, banjo damage, wacked-out country, folk, blues, and endless references to alcohol, broken hearts, and tacos. It captures the spirit of the West in a way that no one had ever done before, wrestled far away from traditional musical convention.
